Went Loco for Your Local

Briefly writing about my late lunch today with Mark at Your Local just ’cause. Disclaimer: I went to have a quick bite after a casting so I didn’t take proper photos nor proper descriptions to blog about. I was just really hungry and I needed good food (You guys have been there too, ok? Those times when all you want to do is E-A-T. You understand. Haha!). I’ve decided to blog about it since you guys looked like you liked what you saw (on my IG) and maybe telling you about what I think about their food would be a good idea.

I barely exerted any effort in taking those pictures as the plating was very much on point (Don’t you just love it when the presentation is already Instagram-ready? Saves us so much time) . You know how some dishes look real good in photos but don’t taste the way they look? Well, the way our food looked today definitely translated into its taste.

First up is the dish I had (Mark didn’t want fish) : Toasted Salmon Donburi. I’m sure this is familiar to you. Many, if not all, of their visitors have posted about this. Not only does it look good on your IG, it’s actually really filling. For the price of Php540, you have yourself lunch and a late dinner. I think I finished only 3/4 of it. This dish consists of torched norwegian salmon (cooked medium), mentaiko, oboro, ebiko and salmon skin on roast corn and shitake black rice. Personally, I enjoy drinks/food with add-on’s that I can chew such as coffee jelly, leek, etc. This had the perfect amount of crunchy for me. I don’t regret the carbs one bit and I’m definitely coming back for a second round.

The second dish that I’d like to share my thoughts on is their Steak Fried Rice. This was Mark’s order. I only had a taste so I can’t really comment on this as much as I’d like to. What I could say though is that it reminds me of Wildflour’s Kimchi Rice except this is a 150g Korean spiced Sher Wagyu with sunny side-up eggs and fresh herbs on shiitake fried rice. The biggest difference for me is their meat. If you’re into thick slices, that’ll be Wildflour. If you are into the thinly sliced ones and a dish with more of a topping variety, this is for you. At first glance, according to Mark, he thought that he’d get bitin. If you watched my Snapchat story though, you would have seen how stuffed he was after. Haha. Takaw tingin. It’s tasty and it doesn’t leave you hanging. If you’re willing to shell out P680 for a good, slightly spicy dish of meat, this is for you!

By the way, Mark got the Tai Mai Shu cocktail as well. I wasn’t able to get a photo because again, our mindset was to get started on the meals ASAP. This drink was recommended to us as Mark asked for their “strongest” one. Their cocktails are at Php390. It may be a bit pricey but compared to other curated cocktails, these are tagged just right. Anyway. The Tai Mai Shu is of dark rhum, 151, pineapple, orgeat, lemon and orange peel. I’d say that it’s a girly drink by smell, looks and initial taste but IT’S ACTUALLY PRETTY STRONG. Mark asked for the “strongest” and man, did they give it to him. Haha. The hit after may vary but for someone with my tolerance, you might want to pass on that and order another one. It may be called “Tai Mai Shu” for a reason. If you know what I mean.

For the third dish, the grand finale: THEIR CEREAL MILK ICE CREAM. Guys, there is no way I’m going to let you visit Your Local and leave without ordering this. Considering that this sells for just Php280, this is actually a pretty big dessert plate. It has berry mascarpone and Fruity Pebbles cereal bits surrounding the 3 scoops of ice cream. Again, I enjoy chewy toppings. Note-worthy is the fact that it looks so adorable. Seriously, would you look at that? Ugh. EYE CANDY. The taste exceeds your initial expectations. You may mistake it for a normal ice cream order with toppings but oh man, this is just way more than that. The ice cream has a thick consistency, rich taste and a generous amount of toppings  (which I appreciate. I just want to give the -_- emoji look when restaurants are so kuripot with their add-on’s). I could only do one scoop today but that’s soley because I have been binge eating this entire week. If I had no shame, Mark would probably be left with just 1 scoop and I would have claimed the other 2.

Aside from the food, you’ll like the ambiance. The dimly lit room, comfy seats and the open kitchen are a few of my favorite things. Their staff was the most accommodating and they were just all smiles. I mean “My Boo” by Ghost Town DJs came on and I saw two of their chefs dancing up a Running Man Challenge. Too cute! The interiors are IG-approved especially on a bright sunny day. Sit by the window and BAM! You’ve got yourself a pretty photo to upload.

Okay, fine. That wasn’t a brief-brief post. I couldn’t help it. I feel the need to always expound. I feel like I owe it to you, my dear readers. My next food post will be more in-depth. I’ll even ask for the secret menu of the next restaurant for ya!

That’s it for now! Posting at 12am because I know that you’re probably starving right now and well, to aid your thoughts on food, let this be of help.

Watch out for my blog giveaways by the way! The sponsors are just… AHHHH! Basta. Stay tuned!

Facial Products: Tried & Tested!

Would you look at that? Blog post #2 is in session (Already? -insert shy monkey emoji-). I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who has taken the time to click on the blog link, to share the tweets and to congratulate me on this new endeavour of mine. It’s one foot in the water but you all have been ever so supportive. Now, now, Kara. Let’s not get all sentimental on this. After all, your blog is still in the works. Here goes a topic that a number of you, internet friends, have asked me about through comments, mostly DM’s. I’ve tried to answer you in bullet points but I suppose you have more questions in mind? Hopefully this will help!

WARNING: This is quite a long post. Not every entry will be this long but I just felt the need to go the extra mile to explain these products because the details are important. If you’re okay with that, then go ahead and scroll down. Enjoy!:)

It’s about time I start delving into what makes up my skin care regimen but before that, I thought I should let you guys know that everyone differs when it comes to skin categories. I’m under the combination skin type meaning I am both dry and oily (I know. It’s complicated. Simply put, I’m oily on my T-zone and dry on the other parts of my face–especially around my nose and under my eyes). I’m aware that I go on and on and on about my facial care on Instagram but never did expound on why I consider the products I’ve posted about my must-have’s. So here I am, listing down my staples.

1. Clinique’s dramatically different moisturising gel

There isn’t a day that goes by without me using this. This is a product that I must have with me everywhere I go. Seriously speaking, I even have the travel-size version of it just because I will never permit my face to go dry. Right after I shower from a workout, I apply. Right after I wipe off the make-up from a shoot, I apply. When I wake up from a nap and my face feels dry from lying down on the pillow on one cheek, I apply. You get the gist. Plus, notice that it says gel. Clinique has the same product but in a lotion formula. This works really effectively but I’ve found it to make me all oily pretty quickly. The gel formula says in its description that it is oil-free. I decided to give it a shot and I’m very happy with its consistency and result. Complete hydration, very light, dries fast (I hate products that take so long to dry. Especially because I always moisturise before putting any make-up on) , spreads on smoothly AND it comes with a pump (very important! I also hate it when I accidentally squeeze too much product out. What a waste). If you are of the pure dry skin type, go on and get yourself the lotion formula. If you are the oily type, girl, I highly recommend this one.

2. MAC’s Lightful C Marine-Bright Formula Softening Lotion

L-O-V-E. I use this EVERYDAY. I apply this once a day usually in the morning, before my moisturiser. I personally use this mainly as a toner but it seems to give me other benefits that I’ve noticed over time. Okay, first off, this is an EXCELLENT toner. It removes dirt off your face in a swipe. I’m not exaggerating. Go to a MAC store with nothing on, feel free to even wash your face before it. Look for a tester and wipe your entire face with it. You’ll be surprised at how much residue is left even after cleansing your face. Second, it is non-drying AND it provides moisture. Take note, those are two different things. “Non-drying” just means that it doesn’t dehydrate your face while “moisturising” means that it leaves your skin feeling instantly refreshed. A product can have one of the two, both or none at all. Trust me, there’s a difference. I’ve found that this softens my skin as well. This “Lightful C” line of MAC in particular (I’ll talk about their other products of the same line in another post). Off the bat, not having read reviews or their product claims, this leaves my skin feeling revitalised and bright. It smells so good as well! I love products that smell like fresh linen (Pro: makes your face smell amaaaaze. Con: those with super sensitive skin might not be too happy about this). Honestly though, it’s not cheap but it’s not that expensive either. If you’re comparing it to drugstore toners, yes, it’s a bit pricey but I promise, #NoRagrets. Just a little bit on a cotton pad is enough. It’s a big bottle of 150mL so it will last you a long time. Remember: you pay for the quality. You pay for the results.

3. KHIEL’s Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate

Good for moisturising but bad for make-up. Thus, I use this only at night. What I do not like about this is that it leaves my face super shiny and this takes forever to dry and sink into the skin. What I love about this is how it makes your face feel like you’ve used a facial masque x 1000000. I use this when I’m in dire need of skin rehydration. When I’m on my period (come on, girls. Don’t get all maarte here. I’m telling you as it is. That’s a good thing. Haha), this comes in handy. I feel like my skin is so flushed out and my face is as dry as the desert. This saves my skin during those days. It’s supposed to smoothen the fine lines and “intensively hydrate the skin’s deepest surface layers”. Well, I can’t comment on the smoothening of fine lines but it’s surely on-point on the intensive hydration. If you’ve been following me on Instagram for quite a while, you’d know that Khiel’s has always been big on my list. They’ve never failed me. I put this on at night and I wake up with extremely soft skin. I’d take this with me if I were to go on a trip to a place that will suck the moisture out of my face. Haha!

4. Origins’ Original Skin Renewal serum with Willowherb

This product gives me the glow I want when I’m brave enough to go somewhere with zero make-up on. If you are wondering what makes this different from the MAC Lightful C Softening Lotion that I’ve mentioned above, there are 2 main differences I’d like to point out. Uno, this does not act as a toner AT ALL. It does not remove the dirt off your face and I would not use this with a cotton pad. I’d pump this once or twice on two fingers, dot it all over my face then spread it with both hands. Dos (Is that even right? Using “uno” now seems so much cooler and I’ve never used “dos” before as an ordinal number but whatever. Haha!), this has a very fine shimmer effect. Anyone who I have talked about make-up or nail polish with knows that I stray away from anything with shimmer, except of course if it’s meant to be a highlighter. I’m a matte kind of gal and well, this serves as the ONLY exception–LITERALLY THE ONLY EXCEPTION. The “glitter” or “shimmer” is very subtle so I suppose that’s what I should give the “glow” credit for. It smells good as well, that’s another plus. Also, I think it’s very essential to mention that Origins is a brand that takes pride in its use of natural products. It’s formulated WITHOUT parabens, sulphates and phthalates and is free of synthetic fragrance and synthetic dyes, petro-chemicals, GMOs, and triclosan. BOOM. For organic product junkies, a path my Mother is veering me towards, here you go!

5. kieHl’s Micro-blur Skin Perfector

THANK GOODNESS FOR PRODUCTS YOU CAN APPLY OVER MAKE-UP. What a dilemma it is to have a face you have worked very meticulously on and yet unable to retouch after. You question touch-up’s and you hesitate to blot your face because it might ruin the foundation/powder you have spread on so evenly, the contour you have brushed on so carefully or the blush you have already gently blended in with your highlighter, right? Well, you have Kiehl’s to thank for this product. It’s lightweight, it minimises the appearance of pores and it refines the skin’s texture; I also have no idea how they did it but it’s made in a way that when applied over a baked face, it won’t ruin whatever make-up you have on. It’s amazing. They made me try it during a Kiehl’s event and can you just imagine the hesitation then? I still needed to take photos and there was no way I was going to ruin my make-up even before getting an Instagram-worthy photo! The lady who I was assigned to was nice enough to give me the facts about it to assure me that it’s safe to apply this without messing anything up. True enough, I tried it on and my make-up remained intact. The creases under my eyes lessened and my face did look more evened out. This is good for retouches especially for those who are conscious of their pores. Good thing I listened to the skin expert!

6. KIEHL’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate

The last but not the least out of my SKIN care product staples. I don’t think I really need to explain why this is a favourite. I think everyone has seen this on a number of people’s must-have’s and I completely understand why. This is a product you use overnight, by the way. If I have a shoot the next morning or if I have an event that I’m required to arrive with no make-up on but still look fresh, this is what I put on the day before. It’s a concentrate that has a number of essential oils and distilled botanicals packed into one formula. It comes with a dropper so just a few squeezes and you’re good. This is a bit pricey for the 30mL bottle it comes in but it’s worth every cent. Kiehl’s states in their product claim: “works with the skin’s natural nocturnal activity – when skin is most receptive to repairing itself from daily aggressors – to dramatically restore skin”. I was sold on just reading that. It’s not like a toner that you have to wait until it dries completely. You have to massage it gently and wait for it to sink in, especially if you twist and turn at night. Don’t put it to waste. Sayang naman. Baka it will end up on your pillow lang. It works. It helps. The reason why it’s a customer favourite is completely valid.

So there you have it: six of my skin care favourites! Don’t worry. I’ll be blogging about facial masques, eye creams, make-up, etc. next time! Sorry if my posts are a bit lengthy. I’m really going the extra mile to describe these products, so you wouldn’t have to research on them and have to experiment yourselves! I hope I got to answer most if not all of your questions. If you have more inquiries, feel free to comment! I will answer you right away in case the others are wondering the same thing.

REMEMBER: Always take care of your skin! Anyone can look like an artista in full-on make-up. Iba pa rin ang natural beauty. Everyone is born beautiful so let’s do our part and take care of what we are blessed with. I loooove make-up. You know that! But I personally believe that clear, healthy skin is one of the best assets of women ( men, too!). SKIN IS IN.

Until next time! Let me know what else you want me to write about. Maybe food the next time around? I’d love to hear from you.❤

Nivea Skin Firmness Check

Hey, girls! (Assuming that whoever will be reading this post will be/are girls. Haha!) So this is my very first legit blog post considering that I micro-blog solely through Instagram. If you follow me on my social media accounts, you would have probably noticed by now that I like to enumerate my favorite beauty products, food items, inspirational quotes and personal tidbits of my life every so often. In light of this, I feel as if Instagram, Twitter more so, are good for my self-proclaimed “reviews” but not what is best for your questions and for my answers. Here I am now, on a blog, ready to give it a shot. (So do cut me some slack! I’m a relative first-timer at this. Let’s see what I can cook up for you guys)

First up is the #NIVEASkinFirmnessCheck event! Oh man, you guys can’t even imagine how nervous I was for this. I barely wear shorts, skirts or anything that shows off my legs because quite honestly, I’ve always been so insecure about my skin! I’m very meticulous when it comes to my facial care but when it comes to my body, I’m much more lenient and much less matiyaga with the lotions, serums, etc. I was so anxious when they told me that I have to jump on trampoline in shorts and  as they have the back of my legs zoomed into! I don’t even have the guts to show off my legs and now this? *gasp*

(photo from @NIVEAPhils)

Thank goodness that NIVEA sent over their Extra White Firming Body Serum SPF 33 and their Instant White Firming Body Lotion SPF 15 products for me to use weeks before the event. Almost immediately, upon opening the package, it’s as if my heart let out a huge sigh of relief and I was confident because they’ve sent what I had considered “back-up.” Haha. Without any second thoughts, I started using them both day and night until the day of the #NIVEASkinFirmnessCheck itself arrived.

Lo and behold my internet friends, it was a success. My heart was beating out of my chest as I took those stairs up to the trampoline and as I jumped for their slow-mo video takes. They showed me the results right after and as I peeked through my fingers covering my eyes, I saw that there truly was an improvement. I can’t say I have ZERO cellulite signs because come on, who has totally zero trace of ’em anywhere right? (Well, if you don’t have any, well, good. for. you. Let me guess. You use NIVEA? Hehe) We watched it together with Mark and my sister and would you look at that? My legs did look smoother AND firmer! Sometimes, you really are left in awe by what science can do, you know?

They asked me a few questions about my present skin care before jumping on. As you can see, I look half-focused on answering and half-thinking about what’s going to happen on that trampoline. You can’t blame me!

I tried to make it look all Lacoste, but failed miserably.

Look at all those lights! There was a huge HD camera behind me by the way. That tiny one in front was for event purposes. See what I mean?

*PHEW* Now that part was over and dealt with, I moved on to the digital tests they had on touchscreen tvs for us to try out. They asked us a number of questions such as “How often do you workout?”, ‘How many glasses of water do you drink in a day?”, “Do you smoke?” and more just so they can roughly estimate the lifestyle we’ve been living by. I answered mine truthfully and well, THANK YOU NIVEA, my result came out as : REALLY FIRM. Yes. Dodged another bullet.

You see these 3 grids? Okay so this is how it works. The first grid is the “ideal” grid. They put 9 sticker dots on the back of my leg before the Skin Firmness Check to see if my skin will move far from the “ideal” lines. The second grid is an example of how a “non-firm” skin would result to in the video. To compare, they overlap the “ideal gird” and “your grid” to see how far the lines deviate from the “ideal.” The less, the better.

On to the ball pit! Hey, this is a no judgement zone, everyone. I’ve always wanted to jump in one, okay? For some reason, there was a time when ball pit playgrounds were hyped up but I never had the chance to check out a branch. My eyes sparkled as my peripheral vision picked this section up, almost like a sensor in the movies. There were children in it but that didn’t stop a 5’11” girl like me from joining in on the fun! Dragged my sister who seemed embarrassed that such a tall lady was having as much fun as the 4 year-olds in there. No biggie. I knew she’d have fun and well, she did. She emerged from that ball pit like a victor– just like her Ate. Haha!

This is me about to help my sister out. This photo got me thinking. She looks so happy. Maybe I should have left her there. Just kidding! (Photo from @NIVEAPhils)

Went on to the juice bar after that because, my, was I tired. They had cold drinks, not to mention healthy ones, ready to quench the thirsts of those having way too much fun (and that includes me.) I may have took home a few bottles for Mark, my sister and me. Shhh.

I had the privilege as well to go live on Facebook logged into the official NIVEA account and I took all y’all on a mini-tour around the event with me. I hope you guys felt my excitement because you know that even on my Snapchat, I do my best to make you guys feel like you are right next to me, experiencing every event together side by side.

IMG_5123 IMG_5111

Well, that wraps up my very first blog post! I really could not have chosen a better first event to write about. NIVEA, you do the world so much good. I applaud you for successfully bringing back my confidence when it comes to being more secure in shorts and in skirts. You really do help girls like me achieve our #SkinsBestYears. Thank you!
